Ask a Florist Friday: The New England Winter Wedding Palette

Wedding Flowers Education

Just Bloom’d Weddings for Linda & Bryan 1.10.2026

If you’re planning a winter wedding in Massachusetts, you’ve probably seen the same two floral directions everywhere: all-white… or white + red holiday vibes.

But winter in New England has so much more range!

This weekend at The Lakehouse in Halifax, we’re designing a palette built around evergreens, soft sage, clean whites, and dusty blue—a classic New England look that feels elevated, not overtly ‘holiday’ themed.

What makes “blue + white” look winter wedding elegant (not nautical)

The difference is in the tones + textures:

  • Dusty blue instead of bright cobalt
  • Soft whites (think cream/ivory variations) instead of stark contrast – we used ivory ranunculus and clean white orchids here
  • Evergreen movement (pine, cedar, fir) for dimension – for L and B, we used fragrant cedar
  • Sagey greens to soften and modernize the palette – we love eucalyptus in all varieties for this!
  • A touch of cool-toned texture (like thistle-style shapes or airy accents) so it reads wintery, not summery

The winter wedding “recipe” we’re using (so you can picture it)

Without listing every stem: think clean white focal blooms, airy supporting blooms, and layered winter greens—with dusty blue worked in like a subtle thread throughout the designs.

It photographs beautifully in winter light, feels season-forward, and still reads timeless New England.

Best places to use this palette at a venue like The Lakehouse

This color story shines when it’s used in moments that guests actually notice:

  • Bridal bouquet + personals (your most photographed flowers)
  • Ceremony focal point (even a simple installation feels dramatic against winter scenery)
  • Reception tablescape (pair it with candlelight and let the glass + flame do the rest)

The #1 styling tip for winter weddings

Add candlelight.
Winter wedding palettes come alive when you introduce glow—especially with whites, dusty blue, and evergreen textures.

Ask a Florist Friday questions

1. How do you make winter wedding florals feel winter (not Christmas)… especially with blue?

Our answer: We build a cool, tonal palette and let texture do the heavy lifting—so it feels New England-winter elegant, not themed.

❄️ Winter Blue Florals We Love

These give you that “classic blue + white” look without going bright:

  • Delphinium — airy height + movement
  • Tweedia — soft “something blue,” delicate and romantic
  • Eryngium (blue thistle) — crisp texture, modern edge
  • Dusty-blue accents (stock/carnations, when needed) — adds depth and reliability

🤍 Whites That Make Blue Feel Elevated

  • Roses / Garden roses — timeless, structured focal points
  • Ranunculus — petal-rich, luxe texture
  • Anemones — high contrast (white petals + dark center)
  • Lisianthus — soft, airy romance
  • Hydrangea (when seasonally available) — cloud-like volume

🫐 Berries + Pods for Winter Dimension

This is what makes it feel “seasonal” without screaming holiday:

  • Brunia — silvery berry texture (very coastal-winter)
  • Privet berry — tiny clusters, understated + natural
  • Hypericum (in muted tones like plum/coffee/ivory) — warm depth
  • Seed pods / rose hips — that subtle foraged feel

🌿 Branches + Foraged Structure

These create that editorial winter silhouette:

  • Pepperberry branches — soft shape, organic line
  • Birch — clean, classic New England
  • Dogwood — sculptural line + modern structure
  • Juniper / cedar / pine tips — used lightly for softness (not “Christmas garland”)

The “Not Christmas” Rule

We keep everything muted + tonal (dusty blues, ivory, soft greens, natural browns) and avoid bright reds, shiny picks, and anything overly themed.

2. I actually want a classic look, so how do you make red and white winter florals feel seasonal without looking like Christmas?

Answer: Avoid bright holiday ‘bright’ reds, lean into darker reds, the deep and dusty blues, winter greens, branches and textures (like lotus pods, winter berries, and build dimension with soft whites, ivory, + cool muted tones.
